What is cellulite and how does it develop?
Cellulite is dimpled, uneven skin frequently affecting the thighs, buttocks and abdominal regions of post-adolescent women. Cellulite may develop due to:
- Poor circulation/lifestyle - Smoking, sitting or standing in one place for a long period of time, high heeled shoes and tight clothes can all contribute to the development of cellulite by reducing the circulation of blood flow and other necessary fluids in your body.
- Weakened connective tissue - Connective tissue is made from a mixture of collagen, elastic and reticulin fibers that are used to bind and strengthen organs (such as your skin) and other tissues throughout the body.
- Hormonal changes - Increased amounts of estrogen play a dominate role in initiating and aggravating cellulite.
- Thickness of skin - Skin is used as a protective barrier from external factors. If your skin layers are thinned, it is unable to protect itself against developing cellulite.
- Diet - Excessive amounts of fat, carbohydrates, salt, alcohol and insufficient fiber contribute and increase the chances of cellulite.
- Activity level - Lack of exercise helps increase the chances of producing cellulite, as it promotes poor circulation and hormonal changes throughout your body.
Is there a cure?
Today, there is no known cure to completely rid any woman of cellulite, but there are a variety of ways to minimize the appearance of cellulite and prevent it from occurring.
WestCoastSkin Offers:
- Topical solutions - Many creams, ointments, gels and lotions that are able to reduce the appearance of cellulite by helping to improve circulation, increase thickness of skin, fight free radicals and give a lasting smooth skin appearance.
Cellulite: Fact or Fiction?
- Tanning hides cellulite - Fact: Tanning will conceal the appearance of cellulite for a short time but long term affects may worsen the cellulite as ultraviolet rays weaken and thin the skin.
- Loofahs reduce the appearance of cellulite - Fiction: Using a loofah (washing sponge) can increase circulation and exfoliate the epidermis (top layer of skin) but is not directly connected to reducing cellulite.
- Exercise helps cure cellulite - Fiction: Experts believe that weight and cellulite are not related. Exercise may decrease fat volume and prevent further development of cellulite but has mild effect on the already apparent cellulite. It can affect even those in top physical condition.
- Creams with natural products help reduce the appearance of cellulite - Fact: Some natural creams are proven to be more effective than others. Topical vitamin A acid derivatives such as retinol, tretinoin, adapaline and tazarotene have been proven to affect the appearance of cellulite. They help by increasing collagen content, by firming the skin.
- Cellulite is genetic - Fact: While making some life changes can help reduce cellulite, genetics, hormones and gender play a large role in the formation of cellulite.
