What is Hyperpigmentation?

Pigmentation is the coloring of a person's skin. When a person is healthy, his or her skin will appear natural in color. In the case of illness or injury, the person's skin may change color, becoming darker (hyperpigmentation). Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition in which patches of the skin become discolored or darkened more than the surrounding skin.

Causes:

  • Skin blemishes
  • Acne
  • Over exposure to sunlight
  • Hormonal changes
  • Bug bites
  • Skin inflammation
  • Wounds
  • Surgeries
Treatment:
There are two main treatments available for hyperpigmentation: skin lightening ointment/gel or laser treatment.

The most commonly recognized treatment today is skin bleaching. Here are a few bleaching basics that you should know:
  • FDA recognizes hydroquinone as a bleaching agent. All other ingredients are considered aids in skin lighteners, whiteners or bleaching.
  • Apply the skin bleaching aid to the desired area ONLY. For freckle bleaching, use a widespread acceptable bleaching agent.
  • Stop bleaching when desired effect has been achieved. It is unnecessary to continue treatment after desired effect has been reached because it will whiten the skin even more than your natural skin color.
  • Use sun protection regularly as sun exposure will not only counteract your bleaching treatment, but will also cause new dark spots to develop. A good sun block will keep your treatments from being undone and will help keep your skin tone natural and even for the future.
  • Bleaching can sometimes take up to a year to achieve desired effect. Not all solutions will result in immediate changes.
