Most people will experience dry skin at some time in their lives. When the temperature outside drops and the temperature inside rises, your skin is likely to feel dry. You will probably recognize the condition, as your skin will feel itchy, tight and rough to the touch. Here are a few ways to keep your body and face from feeling the effects of winter's dry skin.
Dry Skin
A basic law of beauty is that everyone should moisturize. After cleansing the skin, be sure to moisturize. In the summer you might prefer a lighter formulation. In the winter this can be changed to a more creamy consistency. As the purpose of a moisturizer is to seal in the moisture, always mist your face with water before applying.
Bathing
During the winter months, there is nothing more relaxing than spending time in a hot bath. Unfortunately, this is one of the best ways to strip the oil from your skin. Keep in mind that the longer you're in water, the more protective oils you lose. If you love baths, reduce the time and choose lukewarm water instead of hot. Apply moisturizers to skin immediately after a bath while your skin is still wet. Putting on a cream, ointment or lotion helps decreases dryness and itching.
Cleansing
Choosing the right cleanser for your face is something that you should give a great deal of thought to before deciding. A good rule of thumb is that your skin should feel soft and smooth after cleansing, never tight or dry.
Other Suggestions
- Not sure if your skin is oily or dry? Here is a test. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, and then set the timer for 30 minutes. If only ten minutes go by and your face feels tight, chances are very good that you have dry skin. After thirty minutes have passed, check again with a blotting paper. If you can wipe oil from your skin after this period of time, you have oily skin.
- If your skin has a tendency to absorb your foundation by lunch, it probably means that you have dry skin. A cream foundation will give you a longer lasting coverage.
