They say that our eyes are the windows to the soul. While we can't verify this, one thing is quite certain: keeping the eye area youthful and vibrant looking is one of the top priorities of women and men around the world. Sooner or later, we all learn that there is no area of the face more vulnerable to aging than the area around the eyes. But whether it's puffy eyes, dark circles, or fine lines, there is treatment to help you.
Puffy and Baggy Eyes
Fluid retention is the main cause of puffy and baggy eyes, a common occurrence in the morning as fluid builds up while you sleep. This is especially true if you're plagued with sinus problems or allergies, or you're a pre-menstrual woman. The good news is that this is a temporary condition that can be prevented and/or easily corrected. Sleeping on your back with your head elevated can assist with drainage of the eye area overnight. After the fact, you can also encourage drainage by very gently tapping your fingers across the lower orbital of the eyes from the inner corners to the outer corners. Cold compresses, refrigerated gels and cooling masks can also be very effective ways to relieve morning puffiness. To reduce puffiness, hydrate the delicate eye area and protect against environmental agents.
Home Treatment Tips:
- Steering clear of salt and alcohol (especially the night before an event).
- Exercising, which will help your body get rid of excess water.
Dark Circles
Hyperpigmentation (a high amount of melanin in your skin) is often the culprit for dark circles under the eyes, as is engorged blood vessels in the thin skin under the eye. This is especially common for the fair-skinned. Also fatigue, excessive sun exposure, dehydration, and medical conditions related to renal, thyroid and even genetics can cause dark circles to appear. A mere five minutes under a cold compress can constrict blood vessels, which may cause dark circles to disappear. Using products containing sunscreen with at least SPF 15 can protect the eye area from future hyperpigmentation.
Home Treatment Tips:
- Take a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
- Dip cotton balls in rose water and keep for 5-10 minutes on the eyes.
Crow's Feet, Fine Lines and Wrinkles
The fine lines at the corner of one's eyes are commonly referred to as "crow's feet." This area has fewer oil glands than the rest of the face, and is notorious for extra dryness and forming wrinkles. Smoking, excessive sun exposure and genetics can each play a role in the appearance of crow's feet. Genetics cannot be changed, but avoiding sun exposure and smoke can. The sun causes the skin to lose its elasticity, an important factor in keeping your skin smooth. Over time, permanent wrinkles can also develop in the corners of the eyes as a result of excessive squinting.
Home Treatment Tips:
- To minimize skin wrinkling, stay out of the sun as much as possible. When you are outside, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen.
- Clean the face. Remove make-up to open the pores of skin. Remove oiliness by using lime juice or cleansing milk.
The tissue around the eye is very tender. Gravity pulls your skin down all day long, why help it along with all the rubbing, pulling, and tugging you may do throughout the day? While performing any actions around the eyes, use your ring finger. Of all the fingers, your ring finger is the least strong, and you will be more gentle due to the awkward nature of using your ring finger around your eye. While we can't do much about genetic aging, we can work to prevent and treat environmental aging.
