In this month's newsletter we will discuss dark circles. If you happen to have those pesky dark circles under your eyes, then this article will help guide you in reducing their appearance.
In America 9 out of 10 people have dark circles under their eyes at one time or another. Dark circles are the second most common dermatological complaint.
There are many contributing factors that make dark circles around the eyes appear more noticeable. Below are some of the reasons why your eyes may appear this way and as well, how to reduce them.
Causes of Dark Circles:
- Age- The skin covering the eyelids thins out as we age. With the skin becoming thinner the blood vessels underneath become more apparent.
- Allergies, Asthma & Eczema- Although allergies are often the blame for dark circles, anything that causes chronic nasal obstruction and itchiness can make you rub and scratch your skin, which presents a dark appearance.
- Drinking caffeine beverages.
- Fatigue or lack of sleep- A lack of sleep and tiredness can cause paleness of the skin, which allows the blood underneath the skin to become more apparent.
- Iron or other vitamin deficiencies.
- Heredity- Tendencies such as allergies, thinner eyelids and varicose veins pass on from generation to generation.
- Over exposure to the sun- Exposure to the sun can cause a higher than normal level of skin pigmentation under the eyes.
- Fat loss & Nutrition- In general, weight loss can cause the eyes to have a sunken appearance and darker appearance.
- Menstruation & Pregnancy-Both of these can also cause the skin to look more pale and in turn allows the blood vessels to appear more visible to the surface.
- Medication-Any medication that causes the blood vessels to dilate can cause the circles under the eyes to darken.
- Smoking.
Ways to Alleviate Dark Circles:
- Drink plenty of water- stay hydrated.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Wear sunscreen while under the sun.
- Apply cold compresses.
- Use creams such as Hylexin and other antioxidants (vitamin c).
- Use a concealer- usually a lighter shade than your skin tone.
